AVEVA PI System for Refineries - From Data to Decisions – Integrated Data and Flexible Visualization in Refining

At AVEVA World 2026, Amitec will present together with Raffinerie Heide GmbH in the Oil & Gas track under the title:

“From Data to Decisions – How Integrated Data and Flexible Visualization Drive Sustainable Efficiency.”

The joint presentation showcases how integrated data architectures and flexible visualization can transform complex refinery environments into structured, decision-ready systems.

The Industry Context: Complexity Meets Volatility

Refineries operate in one of the most dynamic industrial environments.

Energy prices fluctuate daily. Weather conditions influence logistics and demand. Sustainability targets and ISO 50001 requirements increase transparency expectations. At the same time, operational processes such as tank management, blending and inventory tracking remain mission-critical.

In many organizations, however, data is fragmented:

  • External market data exists outside the operational system.

  • Weather data is used manually or in isolated tools.

  • Tank management relies on legacy process book systems.

  • Energy performance tracking is disconnected from operational decision-making.

This fragmentation slows down decision cycles and increases complexity.

The key question becomes:
How can different data worlds be unified to support faster, clearer and more sustainable decisions?

Building a Unified Data Foundation

The first step was integrating public data sources, including energy market prices (EEX, ENTSOE) and weather data, directly into the AVEVA PI System using the Amitec Connector Suite.

By harmonizing external signals with operational refinery data inside PI Data Archive and AF, a consistent and reliable data foundation was established.

Instead of treating market data as external reference material, it became part of the operational context. Available within the same system used daily by engineers, operators and planners.

This approach ensures:

  • A single source of truth

  • Consistent data governance

  • Structured asset modeling

  • Seamless integration into existing workflows

External context only creates value when it is directly embedded into operational decision environments.

Extending PI Vision for Modern Tank Management

On the visualization layer, the standard PI Vision environment was extended using the Amitec PI Vision Suite.

A central component of the project was replacing a legacy process book tank management solution with a fully integrated, browser-based custom tank management symbol in PI Vision.

The custom tank symbol provides:

  • A centralized view of tank inventory

  • Integrated quality parameters

  • Level trends and historical behavior

  • Access to relevant master data

  • Context-aware navigation

For refinery operations, this means one unified interface serving as the main information hub for many users.

The transformation was not simply a visual redesign. It modernized the tank management process by:

  • Eliminating disconnected legacy tools

  • Increasing maintainability

  • Improving accessibility

  • Enhancing user experience

By extending PI Vision rather than introducing another standalone system, the refinery benefits from a scalable and future-proof solution fully embedded within the existing PI infrastructure.

Connecting Operations and Energy Management

With Amitec energy:center, operational data is directly linked to structured energy management processes aligned with ISO 50001.

This enables:

  • Transparent energy performance indicators (EnPIs)

  • Baseline management

  • Structured action tracking

  • Performance evaluation across assets

  • Continuous improvement initiatives

By integrating energy management into the same ecosystem as operational and market data, sustainable efficiency becomes part of daily operations rather than a separate reporting activity.

From Integrated Data to Sustainable Decisions

This project demonstrates a broader principle:

When integrated data meets flexible visualization, organizations gain more than dashboards — they gain clarity.

The combination of:

  • Public market signals

  • Weather data

  • Operational refinery data

  • Advanced PI Vision extensions

  • Structured energy management

creates a decision environment where complexity is reduced and transparency is increased.

The result is faster decision cycles, improved situational awareness and a sustainable operational framework that aligns market context, operational reality and energy performance.

Meet Us at AVEVA World 2026

We look forward to presenting this joint project together with Raffinerie Heide GmbH at AVEVA World 2026 in the Oil & Gas track.

If you are attending and would like to learn more about integrating external data sources, modernizing PI Vision environments or implementing ISO 50001-based energy management within AVEVA PI. We would be happy to connect.

From Operational Data to Energy Intelligence

Industrial facilities generate large volumes of data: electricity consumption, steam flows, gas usage, compressed air demand, production volumes, operating hours, and climate influences such as heating and cooling degree days. energy:Center consolidates these data streams and contextualizes them within structured asset hierarchies.

Typical integrations include:

  • Main and sub-metering systems

  • Production and MES systems

  • ERP systems for cost allocation

  • Utility billing data

  • Weather data for normalization

Based on this integrated foundation, energy:Center enables:

  • Automated EnPI calculations

  • Baseline modeling and tracking

  • Production and weather normalization

  • Energy carrier distribution analysis

  • Cross-site benchmarking

Dashboards provide clear insights into electricity consumption by production line, HVAC performance, compressed air efficiency, utility usage, and correlations between energy use and production output. What starts as PI Vision Energy Monitoring evolves into structured performance control.

Enterprise Scalability with AVEVA CONNECT

For multi-site organizations, governance and standardization are essential. Through AVEVA CONNECT Energy Management, energy:Center enables:

  • Standardized KPI definitions across sites

  • Global baseline governance

  • Central performance comparison

  • Structured enterprise rollouts

This ensures consistent energy performance management across global operations while maintaining local flexibility.
